UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has condemned remarks made against her by Raheem Kassam, a former aide to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, describing them as racist attacks targeting her Nigerian heritage.
The controversy followed a series of posts by Kassam on X (formerly Twitter), in which he referred to Badenoch as a “Nigerian scammer” and warned people against sharing their credit card numbers and bank account details with her.
Speaking during an interview on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Thursday, October 29, Badenoch said the comments appeared to use her racial background as a political weapon.
She stated that Britain was not a racist country and insisted that attempts to attack her based on her race would not succeed.
Badenoch also suggested that Reform politicians might be using her Nigerian heritage to improve their political standing rather than focusing on issues affecting ordinary citizens.
The remarks have triggered political reactions, with several Conservative figures criticising Kassam’s comments.
Meanwhile, Reform UK politician Robert Jenrick declined to describe the remarks as racist, while Nigel Farage described the wording as excessive but said he did not believe it was intentionally racist.
Kassam, who previously served as an adviser to Farage during his UKIP days, defended his comments as a joke and maintained his criticism of Badenoch.
The controversy has reignited discussions about racism, political attacks and the use of racial identity in Britain’s political debate.
