South-South Youths Urged to Explore Opportunities Beyond Oil

Written by Mary Bassey

The Director of the Abuja Leadership Centre, University of Abuja, Prof. Abdul Hamid Ozohu-Suleiman, has called on young people in the South-South region to look beyond the oil and gas industry and explore other economic opportunities available in the region.

He urged youths to take advantage of the region’s vast natural and economic resources by investing in sectors such as agriculture, fishing, maritime transportation, logistics, technology, tourism, manufacturing, creative industries and entrepreneurship.

According to him, these sectors have enormous potential to create employment, promote innovation and drive economic growth if properly developed.

He also encouraged young people to develop relevant skills, embrace innovation and take advantage of emerging business opportunities rather than relying solely on the oil industry for economic survival.

The professor’s message highlights the need for economic diversification in the South-South, a region widely known for its oil and gas resources but also blessed with rich agricultural land, waterways, marine resources and tourism opportunities.

He maintained that exploring these alternative sectors could help unlock the region’s economic potential and create more opportunities for the younger generation.
