The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed an attack by suspected bandits on communities in Shagari Local Government Area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred around communities and farmlands in the area, including Sanyin Nawal, amid reports of armed men moving through the communities.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the attack, saying the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Shagari had briefed the command on the incident.
Rufai, however, said the police were still gathering information to establish the full circumstances of the attack and determine the number of casualties.
Reports from the area indicated that a police inspector was allegedly shot during the incident and later died from his injuries.
The officer was identified in local reports as Inspector Isah Muhammad Girkau, although the police command had not officially confirmed his identity or provided full details surrounding his death as of the latest update.
Residents had earlier raised concerns after armed men were reportedly sighted moving through farmlands and communities around Sanyin Nawal.
The latest attack has further heightened concerns over the security situation in rural communities across parts of Sokoto State, where residents have continued to face threats from bandit attacks, cattle rustling and other criminal activities.
Police authorities said further details would be released as the investigation and information-gathering process continues.
