Crowd Roars, Tears of Joy as Bassey Akiba Supports Over 2,000 Cooperative Farmers
Adiabo Town Hall in Calabar Municipality erupted in cheers, applause and tears of joy on Saturday, September 12, 2026, as the Member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Bassey Akiba, distributed farm inputs and financial support to more than 2,000 cooperative farmers.
The intervention, described by beneficiaries as timely and impactful, targeted farmers engaged in poultry, fisheries, oil palm and cassava production, with the aim of strengthening agricultural productivity, improving livelihoods and supporting food security across the constituency.

Poultry, Fish and Cassava Farmers Benefit
Under the programme, poultry and fish farmers received four bags of improved feeds each, alongside cash support.
Cassava farmers, on the other hand, received improved cassava stems, fertiliser and financial assistance to boost production and ease the burden created by the rising cost of agricultural inputs.
The distribution triggered emotional reactions from beneficiaries, many of whom said the assistance came at a critical time when the high cost of feeds, fertiliser and other farming materials has made agricultural production increasingly difficult.

Addressing the farmers, Rep. Akiba reaffirmed his commitment to programmes designed to create tangible impact in the lives of constituents.
“We will continue to elevate and alleviate lives and livelihoods.”
Akiba emphasised the importance of supporting farmers whose efforts contribute to food production, household income and the local economy.
His remarks were met with sustained cheers and applause from the beneficiaries, with several farmers expressing gratitude and repeatedly saying, “We can’t thank you enough.”
Intervention Aimed at Strengthening Livelihoods
Beyond the immediate value of the farm inputs and cash assistance, the programme is expected to provide farmers with renewed confidence to continue production, support their families and contribute to food security within their communities.
The intervention also underscores Akiba’s stated commitment to people-centred representation through livelihood, education and healthcare support programmes.
Continuation of Farmers’ Support Programme
The latest distribution is reportedly a continuation of Akiba’s agricultural intervention. Earlier in the year, the federal lawmaker also distributed farm inputs to cooperative farmers across the constituency as part of his livelihood support programme.
For the beneficiaries, however, the significance of Saturday’s event went beyond the quantity of items distributed.
Their emotional response at Adiabo Town Hall reflected a sense of relief and appreciation, with cheers, gratitude and tears of joy marking what many described as a meaningful intervention at a difficult time for farmers.
The programme is expected to contribute to improved agricultural productivity, stronger household incomes and more sustainable livelihoods among cooperative farmers across the constituency.
