Deputy Speaker of Cross River House of Assembly, Rt. Joseph Bassey, has moved a motion on the floor of the assembly, asking the House to summon the relevant government agencies involved in waste evacuation and management in Calabar metropolis.
The matter was brought up as a motion of urgent public importance.
Hon. Bassey, who frowned at the heap of refuse scattered along some streets in Calabar South especially, said the refuse were capable of causing an epidemic and a possible cholera outbreak if not evacuated.
According to him, it was important for the state capital to be kept clean with view to keep maintain its status as the neatest state in the nation.
He urged the House to summon the Commissioner for Environment, Director-General, Waste Management Agency, Executive Secretary, Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA), All contractors serving the above MDAs, Chairman of Calabar South and Chairlady of Calabar Municipality respectively.
The Deputy Speaker said that in Calabar South, over 80 per cent of the streets have been blocked totally by refuse dumps and some persons can no longer access their homes.
Hon. Bassey, who expressed his concern over the delay in evacuating the refuse dumps by the relevant agencies and contractors involved, assured his constituents of his commitment towards promoting a clean environment for business and other activities to thrive.
The House however, asked the relevant MDAs to appear on October 25 to give explanations on the delay in evacuating the refuse dumps.
