The Speaker, Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams has felicitated with Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day being observed today 12th June, 2022.
Williams in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Hope Obeten, commended Nigerians for their patience over the past two decades noting that they should not lose hope as there are clear signs that the country is on its way to gaining the full dividends of democracy.
He said even though the country is faced with various challenges in its march towards nationhood, Nigerians should roll out the drums and celebrate the 23 years of its democracy. He urged Nigerians not to forget so soon, the devastating effect of military rule and how past dictatorships had stunted the growth of the country.
The speaker stressed the need for citizens to participate fully in the ongoing Permanent Voters Card (PVC) registration across the country ahead of the 2023 general elections. He also urged young Nigerians to participate more in the country’s democratic process at both the local, state, and federal levels.
He used the occasion to call on those in authority to build institutions of governance so that the country’s democracy would stand on “sure footing” for the benefit of the future generation.
He congratulated fellow Nigerians for the auspicious day, and reiterated the patriotic commitment in seeing the labour of our heroes never ebbs in vain.
