Dr Ekpenyong lays foundation for new health centre in hard-to-reach community in Bakassi
The Director General of Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Janet Ekpenyong, has performed the foundation laying ceremony for the building of a new health center in Abasi, a hard-to-reach community in Bakassi local government area.
The community, for the first time since its founding 70 years ago, will now have hope of enjoying quality health care, courtesy of the Chairman of Council, Hon. Iyadim Amboni.
Speaking during the foundation laying ceremony, Dr Ekpenyong commended Hon. Iyadim for embarking on such a life-saving project, promising to collaborate with the local government to ensure affordable and accessible healthcare service in the area.
While lauding the Council boss for not only initiating the project but also his zeal in ensuring its completion on schedule, the DG called on residents of the area to rally round the Chairman, because according to her, \”he has exhibited good leadership qualities by bringing dividends of democracy to you.\”Â
She urged them to see the health centre as their project and guard it jealously, as the state government will upon completion, deploy health workers to run it.
On the need to stay safe following the recent outbreak of cholera in the area, Dr Ekpenyong advised them to religiously observe good hygiene procedures by always boiling their water before drinking to prevent all forms of water-borne diseases.

On his part, Hon. Iyadim Amboni said the building of the first-ever primary health center in Abasi community was in line with the council\’s concerted effort to ensure universal health coverage.
He disclosed that \”this project is also a fulfilment of a promise I made last year when I visited this hard-to-reach community.\”
Iyadim hinted that when fully operational, \”this health facility will help eliminate the out of pocket expenditure that makes access to quality and affordable healthcare services inequitable mostly among the vulnerable pregnant women and children under five years.\”
The council boss added that the health centre which will be equipped with modern medical facilities will also help reduce infant and maternal mortality rate prevalent in the rural area.
Assuring that the project will be completed in record time, the Chairman maintained that the health centre was in tandem with the vision of the health care development programme of the state government which aims at taking healthcare to rural dwellers.
He concluded by disclosing that the health centre will be commissioned by the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade when completed.
