Following the persistent and heavy rainfall that has affected Calabar Metropolis over the past two weeks, the Cross River State NEWMAP-EIB Project, led by the Acting Project Coordinatorm, Engr. Obeten Otu, has embarked on an emergency assessment tour of communities affected by the devastating impacts of flooding and erosion.
The CRS NEWMAP-EIB State Project Implementation team, visited several affected communities to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the prolonged rainfall, which has displaced families, destroyed livelihoods, damaged infrastructure, and worsened existing erosion sites.

One of the most heartbreaking incidents occurred in Edim Otop Community, where an eight-year-old child, Bright, tragically lost her life after a residential building collapsed as a result of a landslide following the heavy rainfall and that of Ikot Anwatim were families lost their lives. The unfortunate incident also left them homeless and stranded.
The team also observed that several active erosion sites had expanded significantly, and landslides had occurred in different locations, posing serious threats to lives, property, and critical infrastructure.
Speaking during the assessment, the Acting Project Coordinator emphasized that while long-term engineering interventions are being pursued to address erosion challenges across the state, residents also have a vital role to play in reducing flood and erosion risks within their communities.
Residents were advised to:
* Properly dispose of waste and avoid dumping refuse into drains and waterways.
* Refrain from illegal sand mining and other activities that weaken the soil.
* Keep drainage channels clear of refuse and other obstructions.
* Avoid building or construction on erosion-prone areas.
* Promptly report visible signs of erosion, such as incipient gullies or land movement, to the appropriate authorities.
The CRS NEWMAP-EIB Project extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and all residents affected by the ongoing rainfall. The Project reassures communities of its continued commitment to work with critical stakeholders to rebuild the environment to promote sustainable Erosion control and environmental resilience.
