In a humanitarian effort aimed at easing the burden of rising food prices, Evangelist Effiong Edet Okon has provided subsidised food items and relief materials to vulnerable residents in Calabar, drawing inspiration from Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu’s Season of Sweetness initiative.
The outreach, held over the weekend, attracted hundreds of residents who purchased essential food items at 50% below market prices, while clothing and other relief materials were distributed to the poor and less privileged.
Residents Purchase Food at Half Price
The intervention featured discounted sales of staple food items including rice, beans, garri, and tomatoes, enabling many low-income families to access essential commodities at affordable prices.
Speaking during the programme, Evangelist Effiong Edet Okon said the initiative was motivated by compassion and the desire to support struggling families during the current economic challenges.
“We gave a 50% discount on all the products, and we thank God for the success of this programme. Our Governor has set a worthy example through the Season of Sweetness. Since the days of Jesus Christ, feeding the hungry has always been important. That is why we have come to support the people,” he said.
Organisers Say Initiative Supports Vulnerable Residents
One of the coordinators, Mr. Victor Ekpe, explained that the outreach was organised to complement the government’s efforts by reaching vulnerable members of society with affordable food and relief materials.
He noted that the distribution included food items such as rice, beans, garri, tomatoes, and clothing for the poor, vulnerable, and less privileged members of the community.
Beneficiaries Applaud the Initiative
Beneficiaries described the programme as timely and impactful, noting that the subsidised prices enabled them to purchase food items they would otherwise struggle to afford.
Mrs. Blessing Otu and Praise Emmanuel said the discounted prices were significantly lower than prevailing market rates.
“The prices are very affordable compared to what we see in the market. This is a welcome development because it allows ordinary people to buy food with ease,” they said.
Community Leaders Commend Evangelist Effiong Edet
Another beneficiary, Mr. Romeo Agbor, praised the organisers for giving back to society and encouraged other religious, political, and community leaders to emulate the gesture.
Representing the Ntoe of Ikpai Ohom Qua Clan, Hon. Chief Jacob Daniel Etim also applauded Evangelist Effiong Edet Okon for the initiative, describing it as an act of compassion inspired by Governor Otu’s leadership.
He commended both the Governor and the organisers for touching the lives of vulnerable residents and prayed for continued blessings upon everyone involved.
