The Cross River State Ministry of Sport, in partnership with Square Builders Nigeria Ltd. and Edulumen Nigeria Ltd., observed the ground-breaking of the Calabar Sport Resort and Hotel located in the UJ Esuene Stadium, Cross River State, on July 16, 2024.
The Cross River State Commissioner of Sport, Hon. Agnes Atsu, delivered an opening speech, expressing gratitude to the government and sponsors for their vision, mission, and goal to boost socio-economic development, provide world-class accommodation for athletes, and generate revenue for the state.
The Commissioner highlighted the impressive achievements of Cross River State athletes, who have won numerous gold, silver, and bronze laurels and will represent the nation in the forthcoming Olympics. She emphasized the importance of talent hunt development and the renovation of sports complexes, including other local governments in the central and northern senatorial districts.
The square builders, Nigeria Ltd. and Edulumen Nigeria Ltd., who are the partners for the project, emphasized the significance of sports business development, enhanced event hosting, and the economic benefits of this project.
One of the partners assured the governor of the completion of the project by December 2024.
The partners appreciate the governor\’s swift response to the project in terms of agreement and other commitments.
The Cross River State Governor, H.E. Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, expressed his appreciation to all attendees and stressed the importance of making sports a global initiative and priority in Cross River State through this project.
Otu continued by saying sport is no longer a leisure activity but a business because sport will continue to remain a stimulant of revenue, and this is by establishing a proper infrastructure.
The governor commends the commissioner of sports, Hon. Agnes Atsu, and her team for what she’s been able to achieve within a short period of time. “We have so many people who are eager to involve themselves in sporting activities because the sporting environment has changed.\” Gov. Otu

This groundbreaking of the calabar sport resort and hotel will serve as a hub for sports development, hospitality, and economic growth, solidifying Cross River State\’s position as a leader in sports tourism.
In attendance were Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports, Hon. Ekanem Ekpenyong, Commissioners, Special Adviser, Director General, Board of Directors, Special Adviser, Special Assistant, and other Appointees.
