Five people have died and 40 others were injured after a coach carrying Dutch tourists overturned in eastern Switzerland.
The accident occurred at about 4:45pm on Thursday in a construction zone between the Swiss communities of Susch and Zernez, in the canton of Graubünden.
According to Graubünden police, the coach was carrying 45 adults when it veered off the road, struck a roadside crash barrier and overturned. No other vehicle was believed to have been involved in the crash.
Three of the injured passengers sustained serious injuries, while seven suffered moderately serious injuries and 30 others were treated for minor injuries.
A major emergency response was launched following the crash, with seven rescue helicopters and 13 ambulance crews deployed to evacuate the victims and take them to nearby hospitals.
The identities of those who died had not immediately been released as authorities worked to establish the identities of everyone involved.
Swiss police and prosecutors have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have not yet established what caused the coach to leave the road.
The Dutch tour operator Oad, which organised the trip, expressed shock over the accident and extended its sympathies to the victims, their families and others affected.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin also expressed condolences and said authorities would ensure a thorough investigation into the tragedy. Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima also conveyed their sympathy to the victims and their relatives.
