A death row inmate at the Ibara Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has reportedly been running active TikTok accounts, hosting livestreams and receiving virtual gifts from users despite serving a death sentence.
The inmate, Elijah Oyebode, was sentenced to death by hanging in 2019 after being convicted for the murder of Rofiat Adebisi, a final-year student of Osun State University, who was killed for alleged ritual purposes in 2016. Although Oyebode denied involvement during his trial, the court found him guilty based on the evidence presented.
According to a report by Premium Times, Oyebode operated at least two TikTok accounts from prison, with one account reportedly reaching Level 20 gifting status, suggesting substantial engagement and financial activity on the platform.
The report further alleged that Oyebode created a fake TikTok account using the identity of popular host and activist Omolola Awoyele. He later admitted to operating the account after being confronted during a livestream.
During one of his live sessions, Oyebode claimed that several inmates at the custodial centre have access to mobile phones and internet services. He also alleged that some correctional officers facilitate the smuggling of phones into the prison, while others confiscate the devices and demand money before returning them.
The allegations have sparked concerns over security within correctional facilities and raised fresh questions about the ease with which inmates are able to access social media platforms while serving prison sentences.
