Nine people abducted by suspected bandits have regained their freedom following a coordinated rescue operation by security operatives in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The victims were rescued during a joint operation involving the Kwara State Forest Guards, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), local hunters and vigilante groups. The operation was carried out across the Obbo-Aiyegunle, Ejiu-Ora and Osi communities, located along the Kwara-Ekiti-Kogi border, an area that has witnessed recurring security threats.
According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of Ekiti Local Government Council, Dada Sunday, the security team successfully rescued all nine victims without casualties.
The operation also led to the death of three suspected bandits during a gun battle with the joint security team, while efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the criminal group.
Sunday described the operation as a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against kidnapping and banditry in the area. He commended the collaboration between the Forest Guards, DSS operatives, local hunters and vigilantes, noting that their swift response helped secure the victims’ release.
He also reassured residents that security agencies would continue sustained patrols and intelligence-driven operations to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property across the affected communities.
The latest rescue highlights the growing role of community-based security outfits working alongside conventional security agencies to tackle insecurity in Kwara State.
