Motorists and commuters using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were stranded for several hours on Tuesday after a multiple-vehicle crash at Kara Bridge worsened the traffic situation on the busy highway.
The crash, which occurred in the early hours at the Kara Bridge axis, involved seven vehicles, including a 40-foot container truck, a Toyota Hilux, an interstate bus, a Hyundai Odyssey, a Sienna, a Toyota Highlander and a Mitsubishi Hilux.
Preliminary findings indicated that the container truck developed a mechanical fault while in motion, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into the other vehicles.
The collision obstructed the carriageway and compounded congestion already caused by ongoing repair works on the Kara Bridge. The resulting gridlock reportedly stretched beyond the Long Bridge towards Magboro and into parts of Lagos.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the police, were deployed to the scene to manage the situation and clear the damaged vehicles.
With assistance from towing operators, the affected vehicles were eventually moved from the carriageway, allowing traffic to gradually resume. However, the incident left many motorists trapped in traffic for several hours.
The situation was further worsened after some motorists drove against traffic while attempting to escape the congestion, creating additional obstruction for vehicles heading towards Lagos.
Motorists were advised to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations while navigating the affected section of the expressway.
