Nigeria Lawmakers Demand Freeze on South Africa Ties Over Xenophobic Attacks

Members of the House of Representatives of Nigeria have called on the Federal Government to suspend all bilateral agreements between Nigeria and South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks against foreigners.

The lawmakers urged the government to consider halting diplomatic relations, as well as trade and aviation agreements with South Africa, as a strong response to the situation. They also recommended placing restrictions on South African-owned businesses operating within Nigeria.

Some of the major South African-linked companies operating in Nigeria that could be affected include:

  • MTN Nigeria
  • Eskom Nigeria
  • South African Airways
  • SABMiller
  • Stanbic IBTC Bank
  • MultiChoice
  • Shoprite
  • Protea Hotels

Others mentioned include PEP Retail Stores, LTA Construction, Critical Rescue International, Global Outdoor Services, and several additional firms with South African affiliations.

Lawmakers emphasized that such measures are necessary to protect Nigerians and send a strong message against xenophobia, warning that decisive action could have significant economic and diplomatic consequences for South Africa.
