Mysterious Herbal Drink Claims Dozens of Lives in Ondo Communities

Written by Mary Bassey

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Oloruntoba Babatunde over the production of a deadly herbal liquid substance that has left a trail of tragedy in two communities.

According to official reports, the herbal drink claimed the lives of no fewer than 29 residents of Araromi-Obu and Odigbo in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State. About 60 other people who consumed the same substance were rushed to various hospitals where they are currently receiving treatment for severe complications.

Police sources confirmed that Babatunde allegedly prepared and distributed the killer herbal mixture, which residents reportedly consumed believing it to be a traditional remedy. The sudden wave of deaths and hospitalisations sparked panic across the affected communities, prompting swift intervention by security agencies.

Investigators are currently working to determine the exact composition of the substance and how widely it was circulated before the arrests. Authorities have appealed to members of the public who may have purchased or consumed similar herbal drinks to seek immediate medical attention and report any relevant information to the nearest police station.

Local health officials continue to monitor the condition of the survivors while community leaders urge residents to exercise caution with unverified traditional mixtures. The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with unregulated herbal preparations in the area.

Further updates are expected as the police deepen their investigation into the matter.
