The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Cross River State, issues this statement to provide clarity on the events surrounding the solidarity walk organized by students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) following the tragic motor accident of Friday, 1st May 2026, which claimed the lives of three students.
The leadership of NANS JCC was duly informed by UNICROSS student representatives of their intention to hold a peaceful and solemn solidarity walk in honour of their deceased colleagues. In line with our commitment to responsible student leadership and public order, NANS notified relevant security authorities to ensure adequate throughout the exercise.

The procession commenced as planned, with a clear expectation of non-violence and orderly conduct. However, given the emotionally charged atmosphere and the large turnout of approximately 2,000 students, certain moments became unpredictable, leading to brief tensions during the course of the movement.
It is important to state unequivocally that no lives were lost during the altercation involving security personnel, and no serious injuries were recorded. While there were instances of disorder, these did not escalate beyond control, and calm was eventually restored through coordinated intervention.

In furtherance of constructive engagement, student leaders, alongside representatives of NANS JCC, were received by the Deputy Governor of Cross River State; Rt. Hon. Peter Odey. During this meeting, key demands were formally presented to the government, particularly:
The urgent need to strengthen emergency response services at the General Hospital to ensure timely and adequate medical intervention in critical situations.
The immediate tracing, identification, and accountability of the truck driver and the company involved in the fatal accident, with a view to securing appropriate compensation for the families of the deceased students.
These among other concerns were raised
The Deputy Governor assured the delegation of the government’s commitment to addressing these concerns and pledged that necessary actions would be taken to meet the demands presented.
NANS JCC commends the students for their solidarity bur urges restraint, responsibility, and peaceful engagement in the pursuit of justice and institutional reforms. We also call on all stakeholders to prioritize factual reporting and avoid the spread of misinformation capable of heightening tensions.
Once again, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, the UNICROSS community, and all affected by this tragic incident. We remain committed to advocating for the welfare, safety, and rights of Nigerian students at all times.
