The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has disclosed that no fewer than 18 state governments are currently under investigation over allegations of mismanaging public funds.
The revelation was made on Thursday by the commission’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, during an interview on Arise Television. However, he declined to disclose the identities of the states involved, saying investigations are still ongoing.
Uwujaren made the disclosure while defending the EFCC’s recent decision to place restrictions on an Osun State Government account. He explained that the action was part of the commission’s broader efforts to prevent the alleged diversion of public funds while investigations continue.
According to him, the Osun case is not an isolated one, stressing that the anti-graft agency has taken, or is preparing to take, similar measures in several other states where financial misconduct is being investigated.
When asked if the commission was probing other state governments, Uwujaren confirmed that the number had risen into double digits, revealing that about 18 states are currently under scrutiny.
The EFCC spokesperson maintained that the commission remains committed to ensuring accountability in the management of public resources and will continue to investigate credible allegations of financial crimes involving public institutions.
Although the commission did not reveal the names of the affected states, the disclosure signals an expansion of ongoing anti-corruption efforts targeting the management of government funds across the country.
