Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on the newly appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Major General Everest Okoro, to intensify security operations across the Niger Delta.
Oborevwori made the call on Tuesday when Okoro, who also serves as the Land Component Commander of the Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe, paid a courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House in Asaba.
The governor stressed that sustained peace and security in the region were essential to protecting lives, businesses and critical infrastructure, as well as creating an environment conducive to economic development.
According to Oborevwori, security in the Niger Delta goes beyond the protection of lives and property, as the region remains strategically important to Nigeria’s economy because of its oil and gas activities.
He urged the new Army commander to work closely with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to address security challenges capable of disrupting economic activities across the region.
Oborevwori noted that investors and businesses could only operate effectively in an environment where people and critical economic assets were adequately protected.
The governor also expressed the state government’s commitment to supporting security agencies in maintaining peace and stability across Delta State.
In his response, Major General Okoro thanked the governor for the warm reception and assured him of the Army’s commitment to strengthening security operations within its area of responsibility.
Okoro’s appointment comes as the Nigerian Army continues efforts to improve security coordination across the South-South, particularly in areas affected by oil theft, illegal activities and other threats to critical infrastructure.
