It was an emotional scene at Primary Healthcare Centres in Ndonwong and Akpap-Okoyong in Odukpani Local Government Area, as tears of joy and songs of praise filled the air at the just concluded free medical outreach sponsored by the Member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, Rep. Bassey Akiba.
In collaboration with the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency(NPHCDA), the outreach, held on 17- 18th March, 2025, featured medical consultations, eye care services and free spectacles, laboratory tests, medication dispensing, and referrals, attracting a large turnout of elderly men and women, children, physically challenged and constituents with chronic ailments throng the venue for medical attention.
A team of medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and optometrists, attended to patients with various health conditions, while others who required continuous care were referred to tertiary medical facilities, with the financial burden shouldered by Rep. Bassey Akiba. The visibly elated beneficiaries of the free medical outreach showered praises on Rep. Bassey Akiba.
“Over 99 percent of us here have serious medical conditions which we could never afford to treat. Some of us would have died in pain, but Rep. Bassey Akiba has given us another chance at life. For wanting his constituents to live, he will live long and see no sorrow. We have never been treated this well before. We have suffered because there was no money to go to the hospital. God will bless Rep. Bassey Akiba for this laudable initiative”.
Speaking on the outreach, the DG, BASSEY AKIBA FOUNDATION, Mrs. Precious Esse, commended Rep. Bassey Akiba for his sacrifice, noting that such programmes require huge financial commitments. “He could have spent this money on himself and his family, but instead, he chose to serve humanity. This is truly commendable,” she stated.
