Comr. Ofem Okoi has announced his disengagement from the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Cross River State, where he served as the State Organising Secretary for the Central Senatorial District.
Okoi conveyed his decision in a letter dated September 8, 2026, addressed to the National President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Abuja.
In the letter titled “Letter of Disengagement as State Organizing Secretary, Central Senatorial District, Cross River State,” Okoi cited several concerns which, according to him, informed his decision to leave the organisation.
Okoi Lists Concerns With NYCN Leadership
Among the reasons listed by Okoi are:
- Poor performance by the State Working Committee of the NYCN.
- Inability to effectively mobilise youths across the state for political inclusion and government programmes.
- Alleged misappropriation of government subvention and lack of accountability.
- Failure to sustain the ward leadership structure after it was created.
Beyond the issues contained in the formal letter, Okoi also raised concerns about the leadership style of the current NYCN administration in Cross River State, led by Emmanuel Olayi.
According to Okoi, the administration’s activities and political direction are allegedly not in line with what he described as the Governor’s decision regarding the preferred candidate for the Central Senatorial District, Oden Ewa.
Okoi further criticised what he described as a lack of mutual respect among office holders within the organisation, alleging that decisions were sometimes taken without adequate consultation with other officials.
He also accused the leadership of doing things unilaterally, rather than carrying relevant office holders and stakeholders along in the decision-making process.
Calls for Greater Focus on NYCN
Okoi also called for the NYCN leadership to focus more squarely on the affairs and responsibilities of the youth council.
He expressed concern over what he described as activities and engagements outside the core responsibilities of the organisation, urging the leadership to concentrate on strengthening NYCN and effectively representing the interests of young people in the state.
Okoi Wishes Council Well
Despite his decision to disengage, Okoi expressed appreciation for his engagement with the council and wished the organisation well in its future endeavours.
In his letter, he concluded:
“Long live Cross River State. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
