U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has congratulated Nigeria on its 66th Independence Anniversary, highlighting the country’s strategic importance to Africa and reaffirming Washington’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
In a message released by the United States Department of State on Thursday, October 1, 2026, Rubio extended his congratulations to Nigerians at home and abroad, while describing Nigeria as Africa’s largest democracy and one of its biggest economies.
He noted that Nigeria plays a vital role in promoting regional stability and economic growth across the continent, adding that the United States values its longstanding relationship with the country.
Rubio also acknowledged the substantive diplomatic discussions between both nations over the past year, expressing optimism about continued cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
According to the Secretary of State, the partnership between Washington and Abuja is anchored on shared democratic principles, the protection of religious freedom, expanding commercial relations, and a common commitment to peace and security.
He further reaffirmed America’s readiness to work alongside Nigeria in advancing these objectives, particularly in areas that contribute to regional development and international cooperation.
Rubio concluded his message by wishing Nigeria and its people lasting peace, unity, prosperity and hope for generations to come.
Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, commemorating its freedom from British colonial rule in 1960.
The congratulatory message comes as both countries continue to engage on diplomatic, economic and security matters, with their relationship spanning more than six decades.
