SURCON Warns Property Buyers About This Common Mistake

Written by Mary Bassey

The Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) has urged Nigerians to engage only registered surveyors when buying or acquiring land to avoid potential disputes and problems associated with improper land surveys.

The council’s President, Moshood Akinwande, gave the advice during a two-day working visit to Abeokuta, Ogun State, following an invitation from the Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Ogun State Branch, Abiodun Liadi.

According to a statement issued by the institution on Saturday, Akinwande emphasised the importance of seeking the services of professionals registered with the council before making decisions involving landed properties.

Using registered surveyors can help prospective buyers obtain reliable survey information, establish property boundaries and reduce the risk of disputes arising from inaccurate or improperly conducted surveys.

The warning also highlights the need for property buyers to carry out proper checks before committing their money to land transactions. Buyers are encouraged to verify the credentials of surveyors and ensure that the professionals handling their land surveys are recognised by the appropriate regulatory body.

SURCON is the statutory body responsible for regulating the surveying profession in Nigeria, including the registration and professional conduct of surveyors.

The council’s advice serves as a reminder that verifying a surveyor’s registration is an important step in protecting investments and avoiding complications during land acquisition.
