A joint security operation in Anambra State has resulted in the death of six suspected armed secessionists after security forces raided hideouts in parts of Ogbaru Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out on Saturday, August 22, followed intelligence on the activities of suspected armed groups operating from interior communities in the area.
The Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the security team encountered resistance after arriving at the suspected hideouts, with the suspects opening fire on the operatives.
According to him, the ensuing exchange of gunfire lasted for a considerable period before six suspected members of the group were neutralised.
Other members of the group reportedly fled into surrounding areas, with some believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation.
Ikenga said the operation involved personnel from the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu; Department of State Services; 302 Artillery Regiment, Onitsha; Nigerian Navy personnel from Ogbaru; and Agunachamba operatives.
The security forces reportedly recovered two pump-action guns and charms from the camps. The structures identified as hideouts were subsequently dismantled as part of efforts to prevent the group from regrouping.
However, the operation also recorded a casualty on the side of the security forces. One operative was killed while another sustained injuries after an explosive device suspected to have been planted in the area detonated.
The operation forms part of ongoing security efforts to dismantle criminal networks and armed non-state groups operating in parts of Anambra State.
Security forces are expected to intensify operations in the affected areas as efforts continue to track members of the group who escaped during the confrontation.
