President Bola Tinubu has commissioned what the Federal Government describes as West Africa’s largest lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to ending the export of raw minerals and promoting local value addition in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The state-of-the-art lithium processing facility, situated in the Endo community of Nasarawa Local Government Area, has a daily processing capacity of 6,000 metric tonnes and an annual capacity of approximately 3 million metric tonnes. The project is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s mining industry, create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, and attract more investments into the country’s solid minerals value chain.
Speaking during the inauguration, President Tinubu stressed that Nigeria can no longer rely on exporting raw mineral resources while other countries reap the benefits of processing and manufacturing. He noted that local processing would increase the value of the nation’s mineral resources, stimulate industrialisation, and strengthen economic diversification.
The President also reiterated his administration’s resolve to ensure that Nigeria’s abundant mineral resources contribute more meaningfully to national development. According to him, the government is implementing reforms aimed at improving transparency, attracting responsible investors, and encouraging companies to establish processing and manufacturing facilities within the country.
Officials described the commissioning of the plant as a major milestone in the Federal Government’s strategy to transform the mining sector into a key contributor to economic growth, reduce dependence on crude oil revenue, and position Nigeria as a leading player in the global critical minerals market.
Lithium, a critical mineral used in the production of rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops, and renewable energy storage systems, has become one of the world’s most sought-after resources.
