A moment of confusion occurred during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Tuesday after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and members of the Federal Executive Council were heard reciting Nigeria’s old national anthem instead of the country’s officially reinstated version.
The incident happened during the opening ceremony of the council meeting and was captured in a video that has since circulated widely on social media, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerians.
The mix-up comes more than two years after Nigeria officially reverted to the former national anthem, Nigeria, We Hail Thee, following its signing into law by President Tinubu in 2024. The anthem replaced Arise, O Compatriots, which had served as the country’s national anthem since 1978.
While the meeting proceeded without interruption after the brief mistake, the incident quickly became a topic of discussion online, with many Nigerians expressing surprise that such an error occurred at the highest level of government.
The Federal Executive Council, chaired by President Tinubu, comprises ministers and other top government officials responsible for deliberating on key national policies and decisions.
The Presidency has not issued an official statement regarding the incident as of the time of filing this report.
