Two 400-level students of the Department of Nursing Science, University of Calabar (UNICAL), have earned recognition for their outstanding contribution to innovation after helping the university’s Enactus team achieve a remarkable feat at the 2026 Enactus Nigeria National Competition.
The Head of the Department of Nursing Science, Prof. Alberta David Nsemo, praised the students — Odidi Ewuwuni Ogar, Project Manager of Enactus UNICAL, and Theresa Obguokiri Obianuju — for their impressive performance at the national event held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The students were part of the Enactus University of Calabar team that presented FORTIBITES, an innovative nutrition project designed to tackle child malnutrition through the production of an affordable and nutrient-rich food product made from locally sourced ingredients, including Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP).
The UNICAL team emerged as the second-place winner at the Enactus Nigeria National Competition and also secured third position in the Julius Berger Innovative Challenge, earning cash prizes and other rewards for their outstanding achievement.
Prof. Nsemo described the accomplishment as a proud moment for the Department of Nursing Science and the university, noting that the competition allowed the students to demonstrate their abilities beyond the traditional clinical environment.
She highlighted that the experience helped the students develop valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, public speaking, entrepreneurship, innovation and problem-solving.
The HOD congratulated the students and the entire Enactus UNICAL team, commending them for representing the university with excellence and proving that nursing students can contribute significantly to solving societal challenges through creativity and innovation.
The achievement further highlights the growing role of healthcare students in developing practical solutions that improve lives beyond hospital settings.
