The Nigeria Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, has intercepted a consignment containing 48 suspected trafficked wild animals and arrested three male suspects along the Kano-Daura Road.
The interception was carried out at about 8:30 p.m. on August 25, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation based on information about the movement of endangered wildlife along the route.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Tahir Balarabe, the seized animals were discovered after Customs officers stopped and physically examined the consignment.
The animals included four caracal wild cats, four chimpanzees, two baby gorillas, seven red patas monkeys, two galagos, one honey badger, two albino alligators, six rockfowl, one civet cat and 19 greater bustards.
The Acting Deputy Comptroller of Customs in charge of Enforcement, Assistant Comptroller Muhammad Zanna, who represented the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Usman Adamu, said the operation was conducted in line with Section 55(1)(i) of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and Nigeria’s obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
Zanna said the patrol officers displayed professionalism during the operation, adding that the suspects allegedly made several attempts to offer bribes to the officers.
He described the interception as a major disruption to the illegal wildlife trafficking chain and said the Service would continue working with relevant agencies to combat the illegal trade in endangered species.
The three suspects and the intercepted animals have been handed over to the Special Wildlife Office at the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Customs Service also warned individuals involved in the illegal wildlife trade that enforcement operations would continue against activities threatening Nigeria’s biodiversity and endangered wildlife.
