Motorists and other road users were thrown into panic on Wednesday after a gas-laden Toyota Sienna bus lost control and crashed into three vehicles along Ibrahim Taiwo Road in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The incident occurred at about 5pm near the Stadium Complex Gate, in front of Bekki & Sons Ltd, causing an emergency shutdown of the affected section of the road.
The vehicles involved were a Toyota Sienna bus, a Toyota Avensis car, a commercial tricycle and a motorcycle.
According to reports, the Sienna bus, with registration number LEM 95 XB, was transporting 23 gas cylinders and six drums of carbide when it reportedly suffered brake failure.
The mechanical fault caused the driver to lose control before the vehicle collided with the other road users.
The presence of the gas cylinders and carbide heightened concerns among motorists and residents in the area, prompting an immediate emergency response and temporary restriction of movement around the scene.
The crash caused a buildup of traffic as motorists were diverted from the affected section to prevent further danger while emergency officials worked to secure the area.
Details on possible casualties, the extent of damage to the vehicles and the identities of those involved were not immediately available at the time of filing this report.
Authorities are expected to provide further information on the incident and the measures taken to prevent a secondary fire or explosion.
Motorists have been advised to exercise caution and comply with traffic diversions around the area until the road is declared safe for normal movement
