The Council of Legal Education has issued a stern warning to candidates awaiting their Call to the Bar, cautioning them against wearing the traditional wig and gown or presenting themselves as qualified legal practitioners before they are officially admitted to the Nigerian Bar.
The warning was contained in a notice issued by the Nigerian Law School and signed by the Secretary to the Council of Legal Education and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho. The notice was made available to the public on Tuesday.
According to the Council, only individuals who have successfully completed all requirements and have been formally called to the Bar are legally entitled to wear barristers’ regalia or hold themselves out as legal practitioners.
The Council stressed that candidates awaiting the Call to the Bar must refrain from appearing in court, using the title of a lawyer, or sharing photographs and videos of themselves in wigs and gowns before the official ceremony.
It warned that any violation of the directive could attract disciplinary measures and may affect the candidate’s admission to the Nigerian Bar.
The Council urged all prospective legal practitioners to uphold the ethics and traditions of the legal profession by complying with the directive until they are formally enrolled as members of the Bar.
