Why Quansah Will Miss England’s Next Two World Cup Games

Written by Mary Bassey

England have suffered a major setback at the FIFA World Cup after defender Jarell Quansah was suspended for two matches following his red card in the Round of 16 victory over Mexico.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee confirmed the punishment on Thursday after reviewing the incident that led to Quansah’s dismissal during England’s dramatic 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.

The Bayer Leverkusen centre-back was initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on Mexico defender Jesús Gallardo. However, following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the referee upgraded the decision to a straight red card for serious foul play.

As a result of the suspension, Quansah will miss England’s World Cup quarter-final clash against Norway. If the Three Lions progress, he will also be unavailable for the semi-final, dealing a significant blow to head coach Thomas Tuchel’s defensive options.

The suspension comes at a crucial stage of the tournament, with England aiming to reach the World Cup final. Tuchel is now expected to reshuffle his defence ahead of the knockout encounter against Norway.

England will hope to overcome Quansah’s absence and continue their campaign despite losing one of their key defenders to suspension.
