Reasons Why FG Moves to Register 80 Million Students in National Identity Database

Written by Mary Bassey

The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital identity system by partnering with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to integrate the records of nearly 80 million learners into a unified national identity database.

The initiative follows renewed collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Education and NIMC, with the education sector expected to serve as a key platform for expanding digital identity coverage across the country.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed the development on Thursday while receiving the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and members of her management team during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.

According to the minister, integrating learners into the National Identity Number (NIN) system will improve planning, data accuracy, and transparency in the education sector. He said the move would also enhance access to government programmes, educational services, scholarships, examinations, and other interventions that require reliable identity verification.

Alausa noted that the partnership aligns with the Federal Government’s broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at creating a comprehensive and trusted national database for effective policy implementation and public service delivery.

Speaking during the visit, Coker-Odusote reaffirmed NIMC’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Education to ensure that learners across primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions are successfully enrolled into the national identity system.

She explained that the collaboration would support accurate learner data management, reduce duplication of records, and promote seamless identity verification within the education sector.

The initiative is expected to improve education planning, strengthen data-driven decision-making, and ensure that millions of learners can benefit from government programmes and other digital services linked to the National Identity Number.
