FG Powers Federal University Dutsin-Ma with Solar Hybrid Plant, Boosts Reliable Electricity for Education

Written by Mary Bassey

The Federal Government has officially delivered a state-of-the-art solar hybrid power plant to the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State, marking another milestone in its drive to provide sustainable and reliable electricity to federal tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

The project, implemented under the Energising Education Programme (EEP) Phase III by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), is designed to provide uninterrupted electricity to the university, improve academic activities, and reduce the institution’s dependence on the national grid and diesel-powered generators.

The newly commissioned facility comprises a 1.9MVA solar hybrid power plant integrated with a 2MW battery energy storage system. It also includes upgraded internal electricity distribution infrastructure, smart metering systems, solar-powered street lighting, CCTV surveillance, and other modern energy facilities aimed at improving security and ensuring efficient power management across the campus.

With the project now operational, students, lecturers, researchers, administrative staff, and healthcare facilities within the university are expected to benefit from a stable electricity supply that will support teaching, research, innovation, digital learning, and overall campus development.

The Dutsin-Ma project forms part of the Federal Government’s broader Energising Education Programme, which seeks to deploy clean and renewable energy solutions to public universities and teaching hospitals nationwide. Phase III of the programme is expected to deliver approximately 36.5 megawatts of clean electricity to eight federal universities and one teaching hospital.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Rural Electrification Agency noted that the project reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to clean energy, strengthening Nigeria’s educational infrastructure, and promoting sustainable national development through renewable energy investments.

The initiative is funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in partnership with the Federal Government and aligns with Nigeria’s clean energy transition agenda.
