Why UNIPORT Suddenly Shut Down Its Students’ Union Activities

The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has dissolved all Students’ Union activities with immediate effect, bringing the operations of the union to an abrupt halt.

The decision was conveyed in an official memorandum issued by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, following a directive from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike.

According to the memo, the dissolution affects all arms of the Students’ Union, including the executive council, legislative and judicial arms, hall representatives, as well as every other activity carried out under the union. The suspension will remain in place until further notice.

The university also directed all affected union officials to immediately surrender every item belonging to the Students’ Union. These include official documents, financial records, keys, identification materials, and other union property, which must be handed over to the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs.

In addition, the executives have been instructed to appear before an investigative panel whenever invited to account for their stewardship during their tenure.

The memorandum warned that failure to comply with the directives would attract appropriate disciplinary action.

Copies of the notice were forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Registrar, Chief Security Officer, Bursar, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, and other relevant university authorities.

As of the time of filing this report, the Students’ Union leadership had not released an official statement regarding the development.

The decision has generated widespread reactions across the university community, with many students awaiting further clarification on the reasons behind the dissolution and how student representation will be handled while the suspension remains in effect.
