Cross River Government Clarifies ₦50,000 Support Grant, Warns Residents Against Online Scams
The Cross River State Government has clarified that the ₦50,000 financial support received by vulnerable residents across the state was funded by the state government and not through online platforms such as OPay.
This clarification was made by the Coordinator for Social Investment in Cross River State, Hon. Dr Edem Okokon, during a press briefing aimed at informing residents about the source of the grants and preventing them from falling victim to online scams.
He noted that many residents had already benefited from the ₦50,000 support programme backed by Governor Prince Bassey Edet Otu.
He further explained that the government adopted a community-based approach to identify genuine beneficiaries. This involved reaching out to churches, local groups and other community organisations to identify individuals who were genuinely in need of financial assistance.
According to him, the process was designed to distinguish those who were financially stable from residents facing serious economic difficulties and those who needed support to start small businesses or improve their livelihoods.
The Social Investment Coordinator disclosed that the Cross River State Government had invested over ₦900 million in the initiative, describing it as part of the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable people.
He also stressed that the programme was not politically motivated, insisting that its primary objective was to identify and support the most vulnerable individuals across different communities.
Dr Okokon added that the initiative could continue in the future, depending on the economic situation and the state’s capacity to sustain the support.
The government therefore urged residents to disregard misleading online claims linking the grants to OPay and other financial platforms, emphasising that the assistance was a state government initiative.
