2027: Atiku, Peter Obi Yet to Show Serious Commitment to Challenging Tinubu — Rep Gagdi

Written by Mary Bassey

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, has said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have not made sufficient political efforts to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a political interview, Gagdi argued that despite growing public discussions about the next presidential election, neither Atiku nor Obi has demonstrated the level of political engagement, coalition-building, or grassroots mobilisation required to mount a formidable challenge against the incumbent president.

According to the lawmaker, defeating a sitting president requires strategic planning, strong alliances, and sustained nationwide political activities, adding that there is currently little evidence to suggest that the two opposition figures have begun such preparations.

Gagdi also stressed that elections are not won through media appearances or online popularity alone, noting that successful presidential campaigns depend on building strong political structures across the country’s six geopolitical zones. He maintained that any opposition candidate hoping to defeat an incumbent must begin early consultations with party stakeholders and grassroots supporters.

His remarks come amid ongoing speculation over possible opposition coalitions and renewed conversations about the political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Political observers believe the coming months could be decisive as major political parties assess their strategies, internal reforms, and potential alliances before the race officially begins.

Neither Atiku Abubakar nor Peter Obi has officially declared an intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, although both remain influential figures within Nigeria’s opposition politics.
