At least 21 people have lost their lives, while four others sustained serious injuries in a devastating multi-vehicle accident on South Africa’s N1 highway in the Western Cape Province.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka in the Klein Karoo region, about 380 kilometres east of Cape Town.
According to the Western Cape Mobility Department and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the accident involved two minibus taxis that collided head-on. A third vehicle, identified as a Suzuki station wagon or SUV, subsequently crashed into the wreckage.
Authorities reported that 18 people died at the scene, while three additional victims who were taken to hospital were pronounced dead on arrival. The confirmed death toll consequently rose to 21.
Four other victims reportedly sustained serious injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Officials warned that the casualty figures could change as emergency responders continue their assessment of the incident.
Following the crash, the N1 highway was closed in both directions to allow rescue teams and investigators to work at the scene. Motorists were advised to use an alternative route through Prince Albert Road Station, connecting to the R407, then the N12 and onward to Beaufort West.
The diversion is expected to add approximately 200 kilometres to journeys, with significant traffic delays anticipated.
The Western Cape police have opened a culpable homicide investigation, while the RTMC is conducting a separate inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Minibus taxis are a major form of public transportation in South Africa, and road safety officials have repeatedly raised concerns about the dangers associated with road crashes involving public transport vehicles.
Authorities have urged motorists travelling through the affected area to exercise extreme caution, obey traffic regulations and follow instructions from traffic officials.
