The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced plans to increase Nigeria’s proven natural gas reserves from more than 215 trillion cubic feet (tcf) to over 600 tcf by 2030, while targeting a rise in daily gas production to 12 billion cubic feet (Bcf).
The ambitious plan is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global energy market and transforming the country into a major gas hub through increased production, domestic utilisation and expanded exports.
The NNPCL Executive Vice President, Gas, Power and New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, disclosed the company’s plans in a statement issued by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, on Monday.
Ogunleye said Nigeria would leverage its substantial gas resources to support industrialisation, improve energy availability and promote economic development.
He explained that the company was implementing a Gas Master Plan designed to increase the country’s gas reserves beyond 600 tcf, building on Nigeria’s existing reserves of more than 215 tcf.
According to the NNPCL executive, the company’s strategy also includes increasing gas production to 10 Bcf per day by 2027, with a further rise to 12 Bcf per day by 2030.
The proposed production increase is expected to support gas supply to industries, power-generation facilities and other sectors that rely on natural gas. It could also strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to expand its participation in the international gas market.
The company’s gas development strategy is linked to broader efforts to unlock Nigeria’s gas potential, attract investment, improve infrastructure and promote the effective utilisation of the country’s natural resources.
The NNPCL’s plans come as Nigeria continues to seek ways to reduce energy shortages, support industrial growth and maximise the economic benefits of its vast gas reserves.
If successfully implemented, the targets could improve domestic gas availability, create opportunities across the energy value chain and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global gas industry.
However, achieving the proposed reserves and production milestones will require sustained investment, improved gas infrastructure, efficient project execution and a stable operating environment.
The NNPCL’s 2030 targets therefore represent a major step in Nigeria’s long-term ambition to develop its natural gas sector and establish the country as a significant player in the global energy market.
