Nigeria’s National Grid Collapses Again.

Nigeria’s National Grid Collapses Again.

Nigeria’s National Grid has collapsed for the 12th time this year, plunging the country into darkness once more.

The latest incident occurred at approximately 2:09 pm today Wednesday, December 11th, 2024.

With the grid dropping from about 3,000 megawatts to zero megawatts in just one hour.

A History of Frequent National Grid Collapses.

This year has seen a disturbing trend of frequent  collapses.

11 incidents has been reported since January 2024.

In October alone, the grid collapsed three times within a single week

Thus, highlighting the urgent need for a permanent solution to this recurring issue.

The Weakest Link in Nigeria’s Power Sector.

The National Grid, managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), remains a major weak point in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

Critics have consistently questioned the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) efficiency and reliability, given its status as the only government-managed entity in the power sector.

Affecting Power Generation Plants.

A check on the System Operator platform revealed that all 19 power generation plants were offline, leaving the grid completely out of service

The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) confirmed the outage, attributing it to a loss of power supply.

The Need for a Permanent Solution.

As Nigeria struggles to maintain a stable power supply.

A permanent solution is urgently needed to mitigate the grid’s frequent collapses.

The government and power sector stakeholders must work together to address the underlying issues.

To ensure a reliable and efficient power supply for the nation.
