Nigeria’s confirmed Ebola patient has been evacuated to Switzerland aboard a medical air ambulance following a carefully coordinated operation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The evacuation took place early Monday, October 26, 2026, through the airport’s private jet section, which was reportedly cordoned off by airport officials during the operation. According to ARISE News, a convoy of ambulances and diplomatic vehicles arrived at the airport before the medical aircraft departed.
The patient is a 42-year-old Ugandan-born woman married to a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja. Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, confirmed that she had been evacuated to Switzerland alongside her husband, who remained asymptomatic.
The minister said the patient’s condition had improved significantly before the transfer. She was reportedly stable, conscious and able to communicate, with her laboratory results approaching baseline levels.
However, he cautioned that clinical improvement did not necessarily mean she was no longer infectious, stressing that strict public health protocols were followed throughout the evacuation.
Nigeria confirmed its first imported case of Ebola virus disease in more than a decade on October 20, 2026. The infection was identified as the Bundibugyo strain, and health authorities have continued investigations and contact tracing to prevent further transmission.
As of October 25, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) had identified 53 contacts linked to the confirmed case, who were being followed up by public health teams.
Authorities have urged Nigerians to remain calm, stay informed through credible sources and cooperate with public health officials as efforts to contain the infection continue.
