The National Association of Cross River State Students (NACRISS) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of its former Staff Adviser, Professor Ibiang Oden Ewa, describing him as a mentor, protector, and political heavyweight whose influence shaped many lives.
A revered lecturer in History and Religious Studies, Prof. Ewa hailed from Ugep in Yakurr LGA and was a close ally of former Governor Clement David Ebri. His connection with NACRISS began in the early 1990s when the then NACRISS UCB President, Emmanuel Aben, introduced a young member to him. Their first meeting took place at Prof. Ewa’s modest but welcoming home near the Akim Mgbe Shrine. He received the team warmly, offering guidance on political matters and advocating for bursary and scholarship payments for Cross River students.

One of his first major interventions came during a political controversy involving Governor Ebri and Senator Paul Ukpo over a Cross River Radio contract. Prof. Ewa advised NACRISS to hear both sides before making public statements. This principle of fairness became a hallmark of his mentorship.
Beyond politics, Prof. Ewa’s influence was lifesaving. During the tense military era under Gen. Sani Abacha, he personally warned NACRISS leaders of an imminent government crackdown. His timely advice prompted the then NACRISS president to flee to safety, avoiding what could have been a fatal encounter.
In later years, the bond between Prof. Ewa and his former students endured, extending into politics under the National Centre Party of Nigeria (NCPN), where he served as State Chairman.
Prof. Ewa will be remembered not only for his political leadership but also for his personal courage, kindness, and unwavering support for young leaders. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the principles he instilled.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Papa DC Enamhe
