Over 5,000 Constituents Empowered by Rep. Bassey Akiba

The Member representing Calabar Municipal and Odukpani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Bassey Akiba, has commenced the implementation of a large-scale empowerment initiative targeted at members of cooperative societies across his constituency.

The empowerment programme involves direct cash payments to registered members of cooperatives sponsored by the lawmaker, marking another significant step in his commitment to grassroots economic development.

Speaking with CalabarGist Media, the Cross River State Branch Manager of the Bank of Agriculture, Mr. Ernest, confirmed the initiative and described Rep. Akiba as a visionary leader with a strong passion for sustainable empowerment. According to him, Rep. Bassey Akiba has successfully sponsored over 500 cooperative societies, comprising more than 5,000 members, with a focus on agricultural development. These cooperatives are engaged in ventures such as cassava production, palm oil farming, poultry, and other agricultural enterprises.

Mr. Ernest further disclosed that during the Yuletide period, beneficiaries began receiving their payments, and as of January 2026, over 266 members have already been paid. He noted that the total amount disbursed so far stands at ₦13,832,000, fully sponsored by Rep. Bassey Akiba. He added that beneficiaries expressed visible joy and appreciation while receiving their funds.

Reacting to the initiative, Mr. Francis Effiom, a cooperative member and President of Unit 13, expressed profound gratitude to Rep. Akiba for what he described as a timely and impactful gesture that would greatly improve the livelihoods of members.

Similarly, Mr. Gershom Bassey, another cooperative member, shared his excitement and appreciation, noting that the cash empowerment has provided critical financial support, especially at the early stage of the year 2026.

It was further gathered that the empowerment programme is ongoing, with assurances that all registered cooperative members under Rep. Bassey Akiba’s initiative will continue to receive financial support until beneficiaries across the constituency achieve economic stability and self-reliance.

The programme underscores Rep. Bassey Akiba’s dedication to inclusive development, agricultural growth, and the economic empowerment of his constituents.
