Cooking Gas Prices Drop Nationwide as Improved Supply Brings Relief to Households

Written by Mary Bassey

Households across Nigeria are beginning to enjoy relief as the retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, continues to decline in many parts of the country following improved product supply and lower depot prices.

Market surveys indicate that the reduction in depot prices has gradually filtered through the supply chain, prompting many gas retailers to adjust pump prices downward. Industry stakeholders attribute the price drop to increased product availability, improved distribution, and a more stable supply network.

The development comes after months of high cooking gas prices that placed additional financial pressure on households already grappling with rising food and transportation costs. Consumers in several states have reported paying less to refill both 6kg and 12.5kg cylinders compared to prices recorded in previous weeks.

Operators in the LPG sector say sustained availability of the product has helped reduce supply shortages, while increased competition among marketers has also contributed to the downward price movement. They, however, cautioned that prices could still fluctuate depending on exchange rate movements, international LPG market trends, transportation costs, and other distribution expenses.

Energy experts welcomed the development, noting that more affordable cooking gas could encourage greater adoption of cleaner cooking fuel, reduce dependence on firewood and charcoal, and support the Federal Government’s efforts to promote clean energy and improve environmental sustainability.

Consumers and industry players have expressed optimism that the downward trend will continue, provided supply remains stable and market conditions remain favourable.
