US and Iran Trade Attacks for Second Day Amid Hormuz Tensions

Written by Mary Bassey

The United States and Iran exchanged fresh military strikes on Thursday, marking the second consecutive day of hostilities as tensions intensified over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes.

The latest attacks come amid a deepening confrontation between Washington and Tehran over the waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and serves as a critical passage for a significant share of global oil exports.

Iran has maintained that it has the right to oversee security in the Strait of Hormuz, while insisting the waterway remains open to international navigation despite heightened military tensions following the outbreak of conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel earlier this year.

The renewed exchange of strikes followed military operations carried out by both sides on Wednesday, raising concerns over the possibility of a wider regional conflict and potential disruptions to global energy supplies.

Speaking after the latest developments, US President Donald Trump said the previous ceasefire arrangement with Iran was “over.” However, he indicated that diplomatic engagement remained possible, adding that any further military action by the United States would be swift and decisive.

Security analysts warn that continued fighting around the Strait of Hormuz could threaten international shipping, drive up global oil prices and further destabilise the Middle East if diplomatic efforts fail. This is a developing story, and more details are expected as events unfold.
