The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised alarm over an alleged case of sexual exploitation involving a female student at a tertiary institution in Ondo State, accusing a Head of Department (HOD) of coercing the student into a sex-for-grades arrangement.
In a statement issued on Friday and titled “Our Female Students Deserve Safety, Dignity, and Justice,” NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, described the allegation as disturbing and called for an immediate investigation.
According to Akinteye, the student had only one outstanding compulsory course preventing her from graduating alongside her classmates. He alleged that after returning to the institution to retake the examination, she was repeatedly failed in the course, leaving her vulnerable to exploitation.
NANS claimed that the Head of Department allegedly took advantage of the student’s situation by demanding sexual favours in exchange for passing the course. The association condemned the alleged act, describing it as an abuse of office and a violation of the student’s rights and dignity.
The student body called on the management of the institution and relevant authorities to launch a transparent investigation into the allegation and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable.
Akinteye stressed that Nigerian campuses must remain safe spaces where students can pursue their education without fear of harassment, intimidation, or sexual exploitation.
NANS also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting victims of sexual abuse in tertiary institutions and urged students to speak up against any form of exploitation, assuring them that the association would continue to advocate for justice and institutional accountability.
The identity of the institution and the individuals involved was not disclosed in the statement.
