Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said that if elected president, he would promote a political environment where opposition parties remain strong and actively participate in governance.
Obi made the statement during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, while discussing his vision for Nigeria’s democratic system.
According to Obi, democracy thrives when multiple political parties are strong enough to hold the government accountable and contribute meaningfully to national development.
During the interview, Jideonwo asked why a president who believes their political party has the best solutions for the country should help strengthen opposition parties, especially if they view the opposition’s ideas as harmful.
Responding, Obi said governance should not be about weakening political rivals but about preserving democratic values.
> “If I’m the president of this country, I will do everything possible to make opposition parties strong and participatory in governance,” Obi said.
He added:
> “It’s about democracy. No one party has a monopoly on ideas that make society work.”
Obi’s remarks underscore his belief that inclusive governance, healthy political competition, and constructive opposition are essential for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring better policy outcomes.
