Why Lagos Seals an Ikoyi Property Over Illegal Sewage Discharge Into Canal

Written by Mary Bassey

The Lagos State Government has sealed a property located at No. 5 Manuwa Street, Ikoyi, for allegedly discharging untreated sewage into a nearby canal through a faulty sewage treatment system.

The enforcement action was carried out on Wednesday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) following complaints from residents about persistent environmental pollution in the area.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), investigations by the agency confirmed that the property’s sewage treatment plant was non-functional, resulting in the direct discharge of untreated wastewater into the canal, in violation of the state’s environmental and public health regulations.

Officials said the action forms part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing efforts to enforce environmental laws, safeguard public health, and protect water bodies from pollution caused by improper wastewater disposal.

The authorities warned property owners, facility managers, and developers to ensure that sewage treatment systems are properly installed, maintained, and operated in line with environmental standards, stressing that violators will face sanctions.

Residents have also been encouraged to report cases of environmental pollution and illegal wastewater discharge to the appropriate government agencies to support efforts aimed at keeping Lagos clean and safe.
