Former Senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District and a frontline member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator Gershom Bassey, has expressed confidence in the transformative potential of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, describing it as a landmark infrastructure project capable of reshaping the economic future of Cross River State and the South-South region.
Speaking during a media chat, Senator Bassey urged all stakeholders to support the project, noting that its successful completion would significantly boost tourism, trade, investment, and regional connectivity.

Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Will Boost Cross River Economy
According to the former lawmaker, the coastal highway is a strategic national asset that will unlock new economic opportunities for Cross River State. He particularly commended the project’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, stating that it would promote efficient management and long-term sustainability.
He emphasized that the highway has the capacity to stimulate commerce, improve transportation, and attract both local and foreign investments into the state.
Senator Bassey Assesses Governor Bassey Otu’s Administration
Assessing the performance of the Cross River State Government under Governor Senator Bassey Edet Otu, Senator Bassey acknowledged that while residents have raised concerns in some areas, the administration has made notable progress, particularly in improving security.
He praised the government’s efforts in drastically reducing cases of kidnapping and other security threats across the state but maintained that more attention should be given to addressing economic challenges and improving the living standards of citizens amid the current economic hardship.
Commends Efforts to Secure Oil Fields for Cross River
The former senator also applauded the Cross River State Government’s ongoing efforts to secure the allocation of 300 oil wells to the state.
He expressed optimism that the successful recovery and allocation of the oil assets would significantly improve the state’s revenue profile and accelerate economic development.
Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Described as Painful
On national economic policies, Senator Bassey described the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as painful for many Nigerians.
While acknowledging the need for economic reforms, he questioned the implementation strategy, suggesting that greater consideration should be given to policies that cushion the effects on ordinary citizens.
Calls for True Federalism and Responsible State Police
Speaking on constitutional reforms, Senator Bassey advocated for true federalism and greater devolution of powers to states in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
He argued that constitutional devolution would be more practical than ongoing debates surrounding restructuring and state creation, which he described as constitutionally demanding.
On the proposed State Police Bill before the National Assembly, Senator Bassey supported the establishment of state police to complement the Nigeria Police Force in addressing the country’s growing security challenges.
However, he cautioned that adequate constitutional safeguards must be established to prevent potential abuse of the system by state governments.
Calls for Patriotism Among Nigerians
Senator Gershom Bassey concluded by urging Nigerians to embrace patriotism, unity, and collective responsibility in building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
