The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has taken another step towards strengthening its digital infrastructure and governance system with the constitution of an ICT Policy Drafting Committee to develop a comprehensive technology framework for the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has approved the appointment of the Dean, Faculty of Computing, Prof. Iwara I. Arikpo, as Chairman of the newly constituted committee.
The appointment followed the resolution of the University Senate at its 256th meeting held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, where members agreed on the need for a dedicated committee to develop an ICT policy that would guide the university’s digital direction.
The committee’s major responsibility is to draft an institution-wide ICT policy that will provide a framework for technology deployment, digital governance, cybersecurity management, innovation, and the effective use of digital resources across faculties, directorates, and administrative units.
According to the appointment letter, the committee is expected to leverage current global best practices in technology and higher education to create a policy that supports teaching, learning, research, and administration within the university.
UNICAL management expressed confidence in Prof. Arikpo’s ability to deliver on the assignment, noting that his experience and professional exposure would contribute significantly to the success of the project.
Members of the nine-man committee include Dr. Eyo Essien, Director of ICT; Prof. Donatus E. Bassey, Head of the Department of Computing Engineering; Dr. Ann Agi, Faculty of Law; Prof. Austine Atangharo, Department of Physiology; Prof. Benedict I. Ita, Department of Industrial Chemistry; Dr. Eyo Itam Eyo, Department of Banking and Finance; Dr. Johnson Idorenyin Edet, College of Education; and Dr. John A. Odey, Director of ARCS.
Mr. Item Peter Item of the Registry will serve as Secretary of the committee.
The initiative is part of the university administration’s ongoing efforts to reposition UNICAL as a technology-driven institution capable of meeting global standards in higher education.
