A New Showdown Is Brewing in Nigeria’s Aviation Sector

Written by Mary Bassey

A fresh industrial crisis may be unfolding in Nigeria’s aviation industry as aviation workers have issued a final seven-day ultimatum to airline operators and other organisations that have failed to remit statutory Ticket Sales Charges (TSC).

The warning was jointly issued by the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), following the expiration of an earlier 14-day ultimatum served on July 8, 2026.

According to the unions, the initial deadline expired on July 23 without meaningful compliance from the affected airlines and organisations.

The workers are demanding the immediate payment of the outstanding 5 per cent Ticket Sales Charges (TSC) owed to relevant aviation agencies. They warned that failure to settle the debts within the new seven-day deadline would leave them with no option but to commence nationwide picketing of defaulting operators.

The unions expressed concern that the continued non-remittance of the charges has negatively affected the financial sustainability of aviation agencies, stressing that the funds are essential for maintaining safety oversight, airport operations, and other critical services within the sector.

If the affected operators fail to comply before the expiration of the ultimatum, the planned industrial action could disrupt airline operations and inconvenience thousands of passengers across the country.
